Pest control cost study
We have called some area pest control companies and have received quotes. We received prices for both a one time service and for a recurring service. Some pest control companies offer guarantees. An important thing to consider: Often times even if you choose the cheapest exterminator you may end up paying the same price as the most expensive quote. The following pest control costs assume there is no severe infestation and that the problem has not been ignored for a long time.
All pest control prices were checked the month of March 2015
- Pest Control Company 101 – Our first call went to this national pest control company. They did not give us a price for a single service. They continued to try to sell their ongoing pest control service. Their pest control service consists of seven visits per year. They gave us a price of $127 for the first service and then $77 for each additional visit. There are seven total visits. For a total first year cost of $664 and second year total cost being $539. The quoted price was based on a DeKalb, IL address. Suburbs closer to Chicago may be slightly more expensive. It’s important to note that the salesman used fancy pest control terms most people would not be familiar with. They also provided false extermination information regarding eggs in ant colonies in order to convince us to buy their bi-monthly pest control program.
- Pest Control Company 201– Our second call went to another leading pest control brand that is nationally recognized. The good news about this call is that they did not provide gross misinformation to make the sale. However, it followed the same script as the first call. First, they ask about your problem. Second, they capture your information. Third, they give information about service. Fourth, they finally give you the price. Then they make it difficult for you to get off the phone and push for the sale. When they don’t make the sale, they send you calls from area codes throughout the country. The pest control cost to hire this pest control company was $249 for a single service with a 30 day guarantee. For their Quarterly service they quoted us the price of $219 for the first pest control service and $129 for the additional pest control services. For a yearly pest control cost of $735 This pest control cost is also based on a DeKalb, IL address.
- Pest Control Company 301– This company gave us a pest control cost of $180 for a single service that comes with a 60 day guarantee. The pest control cost of their quarterly pest control service was $180 for the first service and $110 per treatment after the first service. So the yearly pest control cost is $620
- Pest Control Company 401– This pest control company gave us a very vague description of their pest control service. We asked for some more details but things were still not made very clear. So we asked if they could direct us to their website for any kind of additional details about their quarterly pest control service. They then became rather crass and said they don’t put that information on their website. They then ended the call. They did not give us a price for a single service and instead said ants were too hard to get rid of. Their quarterly service consisted of the first service costing $125 with the additional pest control services being $90. So this brings the yearly pest control cost to $485
- Pest Control Company 501– This pest control company is based in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. They answered our questions politely and offered to have someone come out to give us a quote if we had more specific questions. This price was based on a Long Grove, IL address. They gave us a pest control cost of $150 per quarter. So the yearly pest control cost would be $450
- Pest Control Company 601– This company offered a single service with a pest control cost of $165 and a 60 day guarantee. Their regular maintenance service consisted of six services through the summer season at a cost of $125 for the first service and $76 for the following services for a total first year cost of $505. We were particularly impressed with this company’s transparency and detailed rundown of what they would perform during each service.
Our Conclusion
We don’t recommend using any of the national brands for pest control services. Why? They proved to be dishonest when calling them. In addition, our clients’ experiences with them are negative and reflect the same behavior on the phone. For example, a recent customer called for a second opinion after a national brand said their attic was infested with mice and that all of the insulation had to be replaced. This pest control company “coincidentally” installs insulation. After quick examination, it was clear that there was no infestation or health risk to the client. What people don’t realize is that 98% of exterminators in the country are sales people. Exterminators get a commission on the total pest control cost of the sale. It’s unfortunate that many are not honest. Finally, the national brand’s pest control cost is the highest, however, their pest control services often don’t live up to what the national brand has projected.
We recommend finding a medium sized pest control company for your pest control. They seem to be the most reliable. Its also a good rule of thumb with pest control cost not to go with the lowest price. It’s been our experience that people who purchase pest control simply based on the criteria of the pest control cost often find that they get what they pay for. It’s most important to get very specific details regarding what exactly is included in the pest control service. If they can’t explain it clearly enough, move on to the next company to see if they can explain things to you better.
